# Study from your own lectures, out loud

Canonical: https://duckyhelper.com/for/college-students/
Updated: 2026-10-01

DuckyHelper helps college students study from their own course material. Give Ducky your lecture slides, PDFs and notes and it keeps them in memory; then press fn on any slide or problem set and ask out loud. Ducky explains on your screen, quizzes you, saves flashcards that come back before you forget, traces code step by step, and can check what's due this week on your Google Calendar.

## The week before a midterm

1. **Load the course.** Drop the lecture PDFs and your notes into Ducky's memory. Ask "what did lecture 6 say about eigenvalues?" and Ducky finds it.
2. **Work the problem sets.** With a problem open, ask where to start. Ducky points at the part of the question that matters and offers hints one at a time.
3. **Test yourself.** Ask to be tested on the exam topics. In the browser Ducky makes tests of up to 10 questions; on a Mac, quick quizzes of up to 5. What you get right and wrong goes on your dashboard, so you can see which topics are weakest.
4. **Keep it.** Ducky saves flashcards for the definitions and formulas you missed. They come back just before you'd forget them, and an email tells you when cards are due.

## By kind of course

**Computer science**

- Ducky runs your code step by step on a card, like Python Tutor: the line running, each frame's variables, arrays with index pointers, dicts, linked lists and trees.
- It runs your function against test cases in a sandbox on your Mac with no internet, and shows expected versus what you got. Python, JavaScript and TypeScript.

**Math, stats and engineering**

- Worked steps with the math written out, interactive graphs, and your own lines checked with a computer algebra system.
- A shared whiteboard for diagrams you both draw on.

**Science**

- Simulations in the pill: a projectile, a circuit in series or parallel, a titration with a live pH curve.
- Labels on a diagram in your textbook PDF, one mark at a time.

**Humanities**

- Timelines, maps with routes, and short knowledge cards about a person or event.
- Feedback on a paper draft, in your words, with notes in the margin.

The code runner, the step-through visualizer, simulations and flashcards made in a session are in the Mac app. In the browser at [app.duckyhelper.com](https://app.duckyhelper.com) you get the tutor on a shared tab, quizzes, tests, worked steps, graphs, pictures, the whiteboard and memory.

## The admin around studying

Connect Google Calendar, Gmail or Google Docs if you like. Ask "what's due this week?" and Ducky reads your calendar. Ask it to draft an email to your professor about an extension and it shows you a draft; nothing is sent until you tap it yourself. Ducky can't change or delete anything in those accounts.

## What it won't do

- It won't write your papers or problem sets for you to hand in. Follow your course's AI policy; if it's not clear, ask your professor.
- Don't use it during exams or graded quizzes unless you're allowed to.
- It doesn't know your professor's notation or grading unless you show it. Give it the syllabus and slides.
- It can be wrong, especially on advanced material. Check against your notes and textbook. See [AI Use & Academic Integrity](https://duckyhelper.com/legal/ai/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can DuckyHelper read my lecture slides?

Yes. Give Ducky your slides, PDFs, notes or pictures and it keeps them in memory, so you can ask about them in any later session. You can also just open a slide on screen and ask. You can see, search and delete what it keeps in Settings.

### Is DuckyHelper good for computer science classes?

It has tools made for code: it traces your code step by step on a card, runs it against test cases in a sandbox on your Mac, and walks you through writing code one chunk at a time in your own editor. It supports Python, JavaScript and TypeScript for running code.

### How much talking time do I need for exam prep?

It depends on how you study. Plus ($20 a month) gives about 27 minutes a week, Pro ($200 a month) about 278 minutes a week, and Unlimited ($200 a week) up to about 20 hours. Credits from $5 cover a heavy week.

### Does DuckyHelper work on a Windows laptop?

Yes, in the browser. Open app.duckyhelper.com on a Windows laptop or a Chromebook, click Talk to Ducky and share a tab or your screen. Drawing on your real screen, tutorials that follow your clicks and running your code need the Mac app.
