# Stuck on homework late at night: what to do

When you are stuck at 11 pm and nobody is awake to ask, work down a short checklist: reread the question, find the exact step where you lose it, look at one worked example of that step, then ask for a single hint, not the answer. If you are still stuck after twenty minutes, write the question down for your teacher and go to sleep. Most of the time, one of these steps is enough.

## 1. Reread the question, slowly

A lot of late-night stuck is a misread question. Read it again and underline what it gives you and what it asks for. Rewrite the question in your own words in one line. If you can't, that is the real problem, and it is a smaller one.

## 2. Find the exact step

"I don't get it" is too big to fix. Go through your working and mark the last line you are sure of. The next line is where you are stuck. Now you have one step to solve, not a whole problem.

## 3. Look at one worked example

Find an example of that same step: your class notes, the textbook's worked examples, or a study guide. Don't copy it. Read it, close it, and try your own problem. Worked examples are one of the fastest ways to learn a new kind of problem.

The [study guides on duckyhelper.com](https://duckyhelper.com/learn/) have a worked example for each topic, from slope to stoichiometry.

## 4. Ask for one hint, not the answer

If you have a tutor, an older sibling or an app, ask for the smallest nudge: "what should I look at first?" Then try again. An answer gets tonight's homework done; a hint gets you through the test, too.

Ask a good question

Say exactly where you are stuck: "I got to 3x + 6 = 2x + 5 and I don't know what to do next." A precise question gets a precise hint.

## 5. Know when to stop

Twenty more minutes of staring rarely helps. Write the question and the line you got to on a sticky note for your teacher, mark the problem, and move on to the next one or to bed. Sleep helps your brain hold on to what you practiced, and a fresh look in the morning often finds the slip in a minute.

## If it keeps happening

- Start homework earlier, even fifteen minutes, so you can ask in class.
- Do one practice problem right after class while the example is fresh.
- Keep a list of the steps that trip you up and quiz yourself on them for a few minutes a day.

One option

## A tutor that's up at 11 pm

DuckyHelper is an AI tutor for your Mac that works at any hour. In the Eddy tab, open your worksheet in Eddy with Open a file, or snap a photo of the page, and ask about the question you are stuck on: Eddy reads it with you, writes a short hint beside it and checks what you write, without giving the answer. Or press fn over the homework on your screen and Ducky circles the line it means.

Hints in order

In the Mac app, Hint opens a ladder: a nudge, a bigger hint, the worked step, and the answer only at the end.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should I do if I'm stuck on homework at night?

Reread the question, find the last line you are sure of, and look at one worked example of the next step. Then ask for a single hint. If you are still stuck after twenty minutes, write the question down for your teacher and get some sleep.

### Is it okay to use an AI tutor for homework?

Use it to understand the step you are stuck on, not to produce the work you hand in, and follow your teacher's rules about AI. Ask for hints rather than answers, then write the solution yourself.

### How do I ask a good homework question?

Say exactly where you are stuck: copy the line you reached and what you tried. "I got to this line and don't know what to do next" gets a far better hint than "I don't get number 4."

### Should I stay up until I finish?

Usually not. Past a point, tired practice does little, and sleep helps you keep what you learned. Mark the problem, write your question for the teacher, and look again in the morning.
