# How to study for the SAT without paying for a tutor

You can study for the SAT on your own with the official materials, which cost nothing. Take a full practice test in the College Board's Bluebook app, review every question you missed and why, learn the skill behind each miss with the official question bank and study guides, then test again a week or two later. The review of your misses is where the points come from, so most of your time goes there.

## What you need

- **Bluebook**, the College Board's app for the digital SAT, with full-length official practice tests that adapt like the real one.
- **The SAT Suite Question Bank**, official questions you can filter by skill and difficulty.
- **Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy**, lessons and practice linked from the College Board's practice page.
- A notebook or a document for your miss log, and a calendar.

All of these are official and cost nothing. Use the official tests for timing and scores; other practice tests can drift from how the real questions are written.

## Step 1: Take a full practice test, timed

Take your first test in Bluebook in one sitting, timed, like test day. Don't study first. You need an honest starting point, and the score report shows which skills cost you the most.

## Step 2: Review every miss, and write down why

For each question you missed or guessed, write one line: the skill, and the reason. Most reasons fall into four groups: I didn't know the rule, I misread the question, I ran out of time, or I made a slip. Each one has a different fix.

- **Didn't know the rule:** learn it from a study guide, then do 5 to 10 question bank questions on that skill.
- **Misread the question:** underline what it asks before solving; reread the last line.
- **Ran out of time:** practice timed sets of 10; skip and come back instead of stalling.
- **Made a slip:** check by plugging the answer back in; on math, estimate first.

## Step 3: Learn the skill behind each miss

Study the rule, not the single question. Read the guide for the skill, work the examples, then filter the question bank to that skill and do a short set. Quiz yourself on the rules a few days later: recall that is spaced out sticks far better than rereading.

## Step 4: Test again every week or two

Take the next official practice test after a week or two of review, and compare the skill breakdown, not just the total. Keep the miss log going. The same skill missing twice is your next week's focus.

## A four-week plan

1. **Week 1:** Practice test 1. Build the miss log. Learn the two skills that cost the most.
2. **Week 2:** Short timed sets on those skills, 30 to 45 minutes a day. Review misses the same day.
3. **Week 3:** Practice test 2. Compare skills. Pick the next two to fix.
4. **Week 4:** Mixed timed sets, one more full test, and a light last two days.

Who built DuckyHelper

DuckyHelper was built by Yiming Beckmann, 14, a grade school dropout; he studied with DuckyHelper and went from 1120 to 1600 on the SAT in two weeks; 117 of 120 on the CLT.

Where a tutor helps

## Understand the question you missed

The practice tests give you questions and answer explanations; sometimes the explanation still doesn't click. That is where DuckyHelper helps: ask Eddy why the right answer is right and why yours isn't, out loud, and it explains with a picture or a worked step, then gives you a similar question to try. It doesn't replace the official tests.

Hints before answers

Paste a question you are stuck on and ask for a hint first. In the Mac app, Hint opens a ladder: a nudge, a bigger hint, the worked step, the answer last.

Quiz yourself on your weak skills

Say quiz me on the skill from your miss log. Tap or type answers, and a wrong one says why. Misses can become flashcards that come back before you forget.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I study for the SAT without a tutor?

Yes. The College Board's Bluebook practice tests, the SAT Suite Question Bank and Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy cost nothing. Take a test, review every miss, learn the skill behind it, and test again every week or two.

### How long should I study for the SAT on my own?

It depends on your starting score and goal. Many students plan four to eight weeks of short daily sessions with a full practice test every week or two. Let your miss log, not the calendar, decide what to study each day.

### Are unofficial practice tests worth it?

Use official tests first: they match how the real questions are written and how the adaptive test works. Extra practice sets can help for drilling a skill, but trust the official tests for timing and scores.

### Can an AI tutor help with SAT prep?

It can explain the questions you missed, give hints before answers and quiz you on weak skills. It should not replace official practice tests. DuckyHelper is a Mac app.
