Your SAT superscore is your best Reading and Writing score plus your best Math score, even when they come from different test dates. Enter each test's two section scores below and the calculator adds the highest of each. Each section runs from 200 to 800, so a superscore runs from 400 to 1600.

## How an SAT superscore works

The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, each scored from 200 to 800 in steps of 10. A superscore takes the highest score you ever got in each section and adds them.

$$
\text{superscore} = \max(\text{Reading and Writing}) + \max(\text{Math})
$$

Before the digital SAT, the reading section was called Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. It is on the same 200 to 800 scale, so enter it in the Reading and Writing box.

## Worked examples

**Example 1: three test dates**

Problem: March: 650 Reading and Writing, 700 Math. May: 690 and 660. August: 640 and 720. What is the superscore?

1. Best Reading and Writing: 690, from May.
2. Best Math: 720, from August.
3. Add them.

   $$
   690 + 720 = 1410
   $$
4. Your best single test was August, \(640 + 720 = 1360\), so the superscore is 50 points higher.

Answer: Superscore 1410

**Example 2: when superscoring changes nothing**

Problem: October: 610 and 620. December: 650 and 680.

1. December has both the best Reading and Writing (650) and the best Math (680).

   $$
   650 + 680 = 1330
   $$

Answer: Superscore 1330, the same as December alone

> **Tip: Check each college's policy**
>
> Each college decides whether it superscores the SAT, wants every score, or is test-optional. Look for the testing or score policy on each college's admissions website before you decide which scores to send.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is an SAT superscore?

It is the sum of your highest Reading and Writing score and your highest Math score across all the times you took the SAT. If your best Math came in May and your best Reading and Writing in October, the superscore combines those two.

### Do all colleges use the SAT superscore?

No. Each college sets its own policy. Some superscore, some look at your highest single test, and some ask for every score. Check the admissions website of each college on your list.

### Can I superscore the ACT too?

Yes, ACT reports a superscore: the average of your best English, math and reading scores from any test dates, rounded to a whole number. Since September 2025 science is not part of it. The [ACT score calculator](https://duckyhelper.com/tools/act-score-calculator/) shows the rounding.

### Is it worth retaking the SAT for a higher superscore?

If one section is clearly behind the other, a retake focused on that section can raise your superscore even if the other section dips, because only your best score in each section counts. Practice the weak section first, then retake.
