Your turn: whiteboards that check your work

DuckyHelper checks your working, not just your final answer. In the Mac app, write your steps on a scratchpad and press Check my work: every line is checked exactly, and the first wrong one is marked with the reason, so you fix it yourself. In the Eddy tab, Eddy's whiteboard draws a quick picture of an idea and gives you a quick check to answer.

Check your math, on a Mac

The first wrong line, and why.

Ask is this right? about the working on your screen, or say open a scratchpad and write your steps there, by pen or by typing, one per line. Press Check my work. A computer algebra check goes through every line: right lines get a tick, and the first wrong one is marked with what went wrong. Fix it and check again.

Each line is compared with the one before it by computer algebra, not by a guess, so a slip in the middle of right-looking work is found.

It tells you which line is wrong and why, like not equal to the line before, add the five numbers again. It does not write the fix for you.

Eddy's whiteboard

A quick drawing, in the Eddy tab.

In Eddy, open Whiteboard and tell Eddy what to draw: a food web, a force diagram, a number line. Eddy draws it on a small whiteboard one mark at a time while it explains, so you see how the idea fits together.

Whiteboard on Eddy's start page, or Cmd + B. Eddy asks: what should Eddy draw on the whiteboard?

The Mac app also has a shared whiteboard you both draw on, with a pen, shapes, text and an eraser: menu bar duck, Open Whiteboard. Ducky's drawing appears stroke by stroke as it talks.

Quick check

Then answer one question.

Ask for a quick check and Eddy gives you a question on what it just drew: if there were fewer grasshoppers, what might happen to the frogs? Pick an answer and Eddy tells you if you are right, and why.

Stuck before you start?

A hint, then a bigger hint, then the answer.

In the Mac pill, practice problems come with a Hint button. Each press opens one more rung: a nudge, a bigger hint, the worked step, and the answer only last.

Nudge

Where to start, in a sentence.

Bigger hint

The idea you need, said plainly.

Worked step

One step shown, so you can do the rest.

The answer, last

Only if you still want it.

Feedback while it still helps.

Finding out which line went wrong, right after you wrote it, is worth more than a mark on a test a week later. Every check in DuckyHelper tells you where and why, and leaves the fix to you. The learning science behind it: Feedback right away, on the step.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. In the DuckyHelper Mac app, write your working on the scratchpad and press Check my work, or ask is this right? about the work on your screen. Every line is checked by computer algebra, and the first wrong line is marked with the reason, so you can fix it.

Check your math with the scratchpad is in the pill. In the Eddy tab, open your worksheet in Eddy: you write your answer on the page and Eddy checks what you wrote, with a hint beside the question if you need one. Open your homework with Eddy shows how.

Not first. It marks the wrong line and says why, and the fix is yours. In the Mac pill, the Hint button opens a nudge, then a bigger hint, then a worked step, and the answer only last.

The blackboard is for working something out: Eddy writes and draws step by step in time with its voice, then gives you a turn. The whiteboard is smaller and quicker: a drawing of an idea, like a food web, and a quick check to answer. The blackboard has more.

One step per line, with the pen or by typing. Check my work compares each line with the one before it, so it works for arithmetic, algebra and the steps of a calculation like a mean, a median or an equation you are solving.
