The picks, in order

1. Khanmigo

Best for: Low-cost guided tutoring on Khan Academy (US). Price (October 2026): $4/month or $44/year; free for teachers. Platforms: Any web browser, including Chromebooks.

Khan Academy's AI tutor guides you to the answer instead of giving it. It covers math, science, coding, history and humanities, and works next to Khan Academy's lessons. A family plan covers up to 10 kids for the same price.

Why it ranks here: Khan Academy runs in any browser, and Khanmigo adds a guided tutor for $4 a month in the US.

Watch out: US only. You sign up at 18+, or a parent signs up kids. No live voice conversation or screen sharing; it is turned off during Khan Academy quizzes and tests. Full comparison.

2. Google Gemini (Guided Learning + Live)

Best for: Best free all-rounder, with voice and screen sharing on phones. Price (October 2026): Free; AI Plus $4.99/month; AI Pro $19.99/month. Platforms: Web, Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Chrome.

Guided Learning breaks problems down step by step with questions, images and quizzes. Gemini Live is free voice chat that can see your camera or full screen on Android and iPhone. Gemini also makes free flashcards, study guides and full SAT practice tests.

Why it ranks here: The Gemini web app is free for students 13 and up. Gemini Live is not in the web app, and Gemini in Chrome needs a Chromebook Plus and is 18+ for Live.

Watch out: Live is not in the Gemini web app, and Live in Chrome is not available to users under 18. 13+ (under 13 only through a parent's Family Link). Full comparison.

3. DuckyHelper (our product)

Best for: A live voice tutor that sees and marks up your screen, any subject. Price (October 2026): Free (about 6 min of talking a week); Plus $20/month; Pro $200/month; Unlimited $200/week. Platforms: Web app in any browser, including Chromebooks and Windows; Mac app (macOS 14+, Apple silicon).

A live voice tutor. Talk to Ducky and it sees your screen, explains out loud, and shows you: in the web app it draws marks on the preview of a tab, window or screen you share; in the Mac app it draws circles, arrows and labels right on your real screen and walks you through steps in your own apps, checking each one. Both make quizzes, worked steps, interactive graphs and pictures; flashcards, simulations, maps, timelines and the code runner are Mac app only, and longer practice tests are web only. A dashboard tracks time learned, streak, topics, mastery and test scores.

Why it ranks here: Live voice tutoring in the Chromebook browser: talk to Ducky in a panel beside the page, share a tab, window or your screen, and it marks up the preview while it explains, in any subject. It ranks below the two above because it is new and its free plan is small. On a Chromebook you get quizzes, worked steps, graphs, notes and longer practice tests; flashcards and drawing on the real screen are Mac only.

Watch out: New, with no track record yet. The free plan is small, and you get far less talking time per dollar than with chat apps. Drawing on your real screen, step checks inside other apps and flashcards are Mac only. No phone app. Under 13 only with verified parental consent.

4. Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)

Best for: Studying from your own notes and readings. Price (October 2026): Free. Platforms: Web.

Upload your notes, slides or readings and get answers with citations, quizzes, flashcards, study guides, and audio and video overviews. Google says it is free.

Why it ranks here: Free, works in the browser, turns your class materials into quizzes, flashcards and study guides.

Watch out: Works from your sources, not your screen. Personal accounts 13+; schools can turn it on for all ages.

5. Quizlet

Best for: Flashcards and memorizing. Price (October 2026): Free with ads; Quizlet Plus (App Store lists $9.99 and $44.99 options). Platforms: Web, iPhone, iPad, Android.

Flashcards, adaptive Learn mode, practice tests and spaced repetition, plus AI tools that turn lectures and notes into study guides, flashcards and audio.

Why it ranks here: Flashcards and practice tests in the browser, free with ads.

Watch out: Not a tutor you talk to. Its chat tutor Q-Chat was turned off after June 30, 2025. Full comparison.

6. Desmos

Best for: Free graphing calculator, the same one built into the SAT. Price (October 2026): Free. Platforms: Web.

Desmos calls itself "Beautiful free math". The College Board builds the Desmos calculator into Bluebook for the whole SAT Math section, so practicing with it pays off.

Why it ranks here: The free graphing calculator built into the digital SAT; runs in the browser.

Watch out: A calculator, not a tutor.

7. Kami

Best for: Marking up PDFs and worksheets in Chrome. Price (October 2026): Basic free; Teacher $149/year. Platforms: Chrome extension and web app, Chromebooks.

Annotate PDFs and worksheets with text, drawing and comments, connected to Google Drive. Teachers buy the full plan; students usually get it through a class.

Why it ranks here: Marks up PDFs and worksheets as a Chrome extension; students usually get it through a teacher.

Watch out: Not a tutor. The free plan has 10+ tools out of 40+.

8. ChatGPT study mode

Best for: Free step-by-step help on any device. Price (October 2026): Free; Go $8/month; Plus $20/month; Pro from $100/month. Platforms: Web, iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows.

Study mode asks questions, gives hints and checks your understanding instead of only giving answers. It is free on every plan, and it can quiz you inside the chat. Voice is on all plans; Plus includes up to 3 hours a day of Live voice.

Why it ranks here: Study mode works in the browser for free; voice with screen sharing is a phone app feature.

Watch out: It can still give direct answers. The default Live voice cannot see your camera or screen; screen share is in Advanced voice on the phone apps. 13+, with a parent's permission under 18. Full comparison.

9. Microsoft Copilot

Best for: Windows users; screen help with Copilot Vision. Price (October 2026): Free; Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99/month, Premium $19.99/month. Platforms: Windows, Mac (US, UK, Canada), iPhone, Android including Chromebooks, web.

Copilot Voice is free. Copilot Vision can see a shared screen or apps on Windows and highlight parts of it, and Copilot Learn makes quizzes, practice tests and flashcards.

Why it ranks here: Microsoft lists Chromebooks for its Android app, and the web version works too.

Watch out: Vision needs a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium plan. 13+, with some features limited under 18. Full comparison.

10. Symbolab

Best for: Math solver with practice quizzes and a Chrome extension. Price (October 2026): Free basic steps; App Store subscriptions from $2.49/week to $39.99/year. Platforms: Web, iPhone, Android, Chrome extension.

Frequently asked questions

Does DuckyHelper work on a Chromebook?

Yes. Open app.duckyhelper.com in Chrome. You talk to Ducky in a voice panel beside the page, and "Look at my screen" shares a tab, a window or the whole screen; Ducky's marks appear on the preview of what you shared. Drawing on the real screen and tutorials inside other apps need the Mac app.

Can I use Gemini Live on a school Chromebook?

Google says Gemini Live is not in the Gemini web app, Gemini in Chrome needs a Chromebook Plus, and "For users under 18, Live is not available" there. Most students on regular school Chromebooks can use the Gemini web app in text if their school allows it.

Can I take SAT practice tests on a Chromebook?

College Board lists school-managed Chromebooks for Bluebook, not personal ones. If you have a personal Chromebook, use a school device, a Windows PC, a Mac or an iPad for official practice tests.

What are good free study apps for Chromebook?

Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM), Desmos, Quizlet's free plan, the Gemini web app, ChatGPT's free plan and Khan Academy all work in a Chromebook browser at no cost. DuckyHelper's free plan gives about 6 minutes of talking a week.

Will my school let me use these?

School Chromebooks are managed, so your school decides which sites and extensions work. Gemini and Gemini Notebook can be turned on for school accounts by an administrator. If a site is blocked, ask your teacher or IT team.
