Four ways to practice
Say it, get scored, try again
Ask "how do I say je voudrais?" A pronunciation card opens. Tap the mic and say it. The card scores each word, and each sound when it can, plays the model voice, plays your own try back, and shows a short tip, like where to put your tongue. Try again until it sounds right.
Read along
Open an article or a page of your reader in the language you're learning. Ducky reads it aloud and each word lights up on your screen as it's said. Then switch: you read aloud, the highlight follows you, and Ducky tells you the words you stumbled on or skipped.
Type the new spelling
Writing in a new language? Ducky puts grey ghost letters at your caret in the real text box, in any app. Type over them. A wrong letter turns red, and Ducky tells you which one to delete.
Remember the words
Ducky saves flashcards for the words and phrases you miss, with spaced repetition: they come back just before you'd forget them. You can flip and rate each card, or answer out loud. Tap a word you don't know for a dictionary card with its meaning and an example sentence.
A 10-minute session (Mac)
| Minutes | What you do |
|---|---|
| 0 to 3 | Review the flashcards that are due, answering out loud |
| 3 to 6 | Read a short paragraph aloud while the highlight follows you |
| 6 to 9 | Practice the 3 words you stumbled on with the pronunciation card |
| 9 to 10 | Ducky saves new cards for tomorrow |
Ten minutes a day is about 70 minutes a week, more than Plus includes (about 27 minutes a week). Pro, Unlimited or credits cover it; see Pricing.
What it won't do
- It isn't a full course with levels and a set path. You bring the material, or ask Ducky what to practice next.
- Pronunciation scores are a guide, not an official test result.
- It can make mistakes in grammar or meaning, especially with slang and regional usage. Check with a teacher or a good dictionary when it matters.
Frequently asked questions
Can DuckyHelper help me with pronunciation?
Yes. The pronunciation card scores what you say word by word, and by sound when available. You can hear the model voice, play your own try back and try again, with a short tip for the hard part.
Which languages does DuckyHelper support?
Ducky can explain and quiz you on any language you study. The pronunciation card takes a language code, such as French or Spanish, for the phrase you practice. How good the scoring is can vary by language.
Does DuckyHelper have flashcards?
Yes. Ducky saves flashcards for words and phrases you miss and brings them back with spaced repetition, just before you would forget them. You can review in the pill, flip and rate each card, or answer out loud. An email can remind you when cards are due.
Can I practice reading out loud?
Yes. Open any text and ask Ducky to follow you. As you read aloud, the highlight follows your place on the screen, and afterwards Ducky tells you the words you stumbled on or skipped so you can practice them.
