Why DuckyHelper

Tried answer apps? This is different.

An answer app gives you the answer, and you move on without learning the step. A study of high school math found that students with unguarded AI help did better on practice and worse on the exam. DuckyHelper is built the other way: it talks with you, shows you the steps, gives a hint before the answer and checks your own try.

The problem

Getting the answer is not learning it

In a field experiment with about a thousand high school students, those given plain GPT-4 for math practice did much better while they practised and 17% worse on the exam once it was taken away. A version that gave hints instead of answers did not do that harm. The answer felt like progress; the test showed it wasn't.

An answer app and a tutor that shows you

Two kinds of study help, not two products. Product comparisons are on the compare pages.

How it teaches

Steps you can see

Hints, one rung at a time

In the Mac app, press Hint: a nudge, a bigger hint, the worked step, and the answer last.

Show while it talks

Eddy writes on a blackboard in time with its voice; on a Mac, Ducky circles the exact line on your screen.

Your turn

After an explanation, Eddy hands you a your-turn on a small whiteboard and checks it.

Practice that comes back

Quizzes tell you why an answer is wrong, and missed questions return as flashcards on a schedule.

See it in action

Reading it isn't knowing it: quiz me, answer any way you like, press Hint when stuck, and the one you missed comes back. Mac app, narrated.

Built and trained to teach

DuckyHelper is trained on 1,000,000+ tutoring examples and built on 100+ learning-science papers: one-on-one tutoring, worked examples, retrieval practice, spaced practice and explaining it back.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. It talks you through the steps and shows them while it talks. In the Mac app the Hint button gives a nudge, then a bigger hint, then the worked step, and the answer last. On your homework file, Eddy gives hints first and checks what you wrote instead of saying the answer.

When you have tried and want to check, yes: the last rung of the hint ladder is the answer, and a quiz shows the right answer with why. What it avoids is doing your homework for you before you have tried, because that is the help that hurts test scores.

A 2025 field experiment in high school math, published in PNAS, found that unguarded GPT-4 help raised practice grades and lowered exam grades by 17%, while a tutor version that gave hints did not cause that harm. DuckyHelper's research pages summarize this and the 100+ papers behind its design.

It is a different kind of tool: a voice tutor that shows you, rather than a chat window that writes answers. You talk, and it explains with a blackboard, pictures or marks on your screen, then checks your try. DuckyHelper vs ChatGPT puts the two side by side.

Yes. Math gets worked steps and graphs, science gets simulations and labelled pictures, history gets maps and timelines, languages get pronunciation checks, and code runs line by line so you can see what it does. Whatever the subject, it asks you to do the step.
