Grade calculator

Your class grade is each category's weight times its score, added up and divided by the total weight. Enter categories like homework 20% and tests 50%, with a percent or points like 46/50. If the weights you enter do not add up to 100, the calculator divides by their sum and tells you.

Updated

Score: a percent like 92, or points like 46/50.

Your grade

86.5% B

The weights used add up to 80%, not 100%, so the total is divided by 80. Final exam has no score yet, so it is left out.

(20 x 94 + 20 x 90 + 40 x 81) / 80 = 86.5

How a weighted grade works

Teachers often split a grade into categories, each worth part of the total. A test category worth 50% counts five times as much as a 10% homework category. Multiply each category's average by its weight, add those up, and divide by the sum of the weights.

grade=w1s1+w2s2+⋯+wnsnw1+w2+⋯+wn\text{grade} = \frac{w_1 s_1 + w_2 s_2 + \cdots + w_n s_n}{w_1 + w_2 + \cdots + w_n}

When the weights add up to 100, dividing by 100 just turns them into percents. When they do not, for example because the final exam has not happened yet, dividing by their actual sum spreads the missing weight over the categories you have. The calculator always says which one it did.

Worked examples

Example 1: weights that add up to 100

Problem Homework is 20% (your average 95), quizzes 30% (82) and tests 50% (78). What is your grade?

  1. Multiply each average by its weight.
    20×95+30×82+50×78=1900+2460+3900=826020 \times 95 + 30 \times 82 + 50 \times 78 = 1900 + 2460 + 3900 = 8260
  2. Divide by the total weight.
    8260100=82.6\frac{8260}{100} = 82.6

Answer 82.6%, a B-

Example 2: the final has not happened yet

Problem Homework 20% (92), tests 50% (81), final exam 30% (not taken yet). What is your grade right now?

  1. Leave out the final. The weights you have add up to 70, not 100.
    20+50=7020 + 50 = 70
  2. Weighted sum of what you have.
    20×92+50×81=1840+4050=589020 \times 92 + 50 \times 81 = 1840 + 4050 = 5890
  3. Divide by 70, the weight actually used.
    589070=84.14\frac{5890}{70} = 84.14

Answer 84.14%, a B

Frequently asked questions

What if my category weights do not add up to 100?

The calculator divides by the weights you entered, so the categories keep the same share relative to each other. For weights 20 and 40 it divides by 60. The result line tells you when this happened, so you can check you did not miss a category.

What if a category has no grades yet?

Enter its weight and leave the score empty. The calculator leaves it out and spreads its weight over the others, which is how most online gradebooks show a grade during the term. It names the categories it left out.

Can I enter points instead of a percent?

Yes. Type points like 46/50 in the score box and it becomes 92%. For a category with many assignments, add up the points you earned and the points possible first, for example 182/200.

Is 89.5% an A- or a B+?

It depends on your school. Some teachers round 89.5 up to 90, and some do not round at all. The calculator shows two decimals and uses the common cutoffs without rounding, so 89.5 shows as a B+.

How do I find out what I need on my final?

Use this calculator to get your grade without the final, then enter that grade and the final's weight in the final grade calculator. It shows the score you need for the grade you want.
