Worked examples

Example 1: SAT to ACT

Problem You scored 1350 on the SAT. What ACT Composite is that?

  1. Find the range that holds 1350: 1330 to 1350.
  2. Read across to the ACT column.

Answer ACT 29

Example 2: which score is higher?

Problem You have an ACT 27 and an SAT 1300. Which one should you send?

  1. Convert the SAT: 1300 is in the 1300 to 1320 range, which matches ACT 28.
  2. Compare like with like: ACT 28 (from the SAT) against your real ACT 27.

Answer The SAT 1300 is a little higher in concordance terms

Does it still apply to the digital SAT and the enhanced ACT?

These are still the official tables. ACT's 2025 guidance on the enhanced ACT says the current ACT/SAT concordance can continue to be used, and that an update would need data from students who took both the enhanced ACT and the digital SAT. College Board's SAT and ACT comparison page links the same 2018 tables.

A concorded score is a comparison, not a prediction. College Board notes that it is not a perfect prediction of how a student would do on the other test.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1400 SAT better than a 30 ACT?

Slightly, by the official concordance. An SAT 1400 matches an ACT 31, one point above 30. Going the other way, an ACT 30 matches an SAT 1370. A concorded score is a comparison, not an exact prediction, so a one point gap is small.

Why does one ACT score match a range of SAT scores?

The SAT total moves in steps of 10 from 400 to 1600, while the ACT Composite runs from 1 to 36, so several SAT totals share each ACT score. The single score in the chart is the one ACT and College Board say to use when one number is needed.

Is the 2018 concordance still official?

Yes. ACT says its concordance tables were released in 2018 and are not updated every year, and its 2025 guidance says they can still be used with the enhanced ACT. College Board links the same tables on its comparison page.

Should I take the SAT or the ACT?

Take a free official practice test of each under timed conditions, then convert the SAT result with this tool and compare. Many students score noticeably better on one. Also check whether the colleges you want require or recommend either test.
